The Witch of Portobello

Some books demand your attention, The Witch of Portobello is one of them.  I started reading it yesterday morning and just finished it. You could say I have alot of free time on my hands lately but I would have probably done the same thing even if I were busy.  I am a self-confessed Paolo Coelho junkie.  Two years ago I was lucky enough to see him talk in person in Cairo’s Sakyet el-Sawi (El Sawi Culture Wheel) and was very impressed.  The Alchemist, Veronica Decides to Die, Eleven Minutes, The Zahir, By the River Piedra I Sat Down and Wept and today I have added The Witch of Portobello to the list of Coelho books I’ve read.

The book is written in a first person narration format by several people telling the story of how the witch of Portobello or Athena came to be. From a mixed background of Lebanese, Romanin and English rises a very interesting, troubled and complex woman, who gets married, has a son, gets divorced, learns to dance and enjoys the art of calligraphy in order to find her mission and path in life.

It is a good read but I am biased, the Alchemist is still my favorite perhaps because we all find something to identify with in that book unlike TWoP you are merely a spectator on the bus of someone else’s journey.  My feelings towards the protagonist  ranged from anger and irritation to admiration and respect.  The book is an interesting one but did not make me feel that I had to delve deeper into my soul to be able to finish it like I had to do with the Alchemist (I told you I was biased).

Overall it was an entertaining and pleasing read and I would definitely recommend it.
