Updates, I think

Alexandria Airport Departure Hall

I gave myself a very long vacation.  Well I did blog in the middle and came up with a few posts but they were all written on the same day when I had a hit of inspiration and scheduled.

I am back now.  I had a wonderful vacation with my family.  I always miss them terribly so getting a month with them was a wonderful thing.  I think I should thank my husband for agreeing to stay along for a whole month.  Meesh,  thank you because I know how much you missed Lulu and I when we were gone  and for having to eat junk food while we were gone too.  I would also like to thank my mom and sister.  You probably have seen her comment on many of my posts as “inas”".  Yup my mom reads my posts, comments and makes public comments about my weight gain.  Mummy, I promise to lose the weight and stop being a sissy.  There, a public promise/announcement about my weight issue.  Thank you Meeema  (also known as RJay or Reem my sister) for letting Lulu abuse your face creams, nail polish and perfumes.  I think she is now addicted to the stuff.  My sister introduced my daughter to peel off nail polish now she keeps coming up to me to show me her painted toenails and nails.  I used to think parents were crazy to paint their little girls’ nails but now when I see her smile I totally get why they do it.

It was a long awaited and much needed vacation.  At first it was not going according to my crazy plans or really high expectations but then I gave in and decided that there was no way things were going to happen my way so I might as well enjoy what comes anyway.

Don't they just look gorgeous?

Remember my stack of 11 books?  Well I added another 8 to them.  I didn’t want to buy any, nor did I plan to.  But those pesky books know my name.  They called my name and whispered sweet nothings begging me to buy them and who am I to refuse a book’s plea.  From top to bottom they are:

  1. Feel the fear and do it anyway by Susan Jeffers
  2. رحيق العمر – جلال أمين
  3. وصف مصر في نهاية القرن العشرين – جلال أمين
  4. رصف مصر – عمر طاهر
  5. How to travel with a salmon by Umberto Eco
  6. مقتل الرجل الكبير – إبراهيم عيسى
  7. Think before it’s too late – Edward De Bono
  8. The Black Swan by Nassim Nicholas Taleb

You totally understand why I got them right?  They’re all really really useful books.  Besides they look so pretty.

So warm and cozy

My favorite mug might live at my mum’s house but my second favorite mug lives here.  It even has it’s own cozy and looks so cute.  I really should stop thinking about mugs the way I do.  But mugs are really important.  I mean who doesn’t drink at least 3 cups of coffee a day in their favorite mug?  It has to be the right size, the right color and just fit in your hands perfectly.  Otherwise it’s just a vessel for coffee.  But a good mug is an experience worth having.  Just like the perfect pair of shoes.  You can think of shoes as containers for your feet, or you can think of them as the platform you stand in every day to deal with the world.  They take you from one place to the next.  They take you to greatness, they run with you when you run from fear and they make you look taller or slimmer if you choose the right pair.  The right pair will hug your feet and support you all day long while still looking pretty and nice.  I also feel as strong about my pens ( I love fountain pens) as I feel about mugs and shoes.  I am not an overtly sentimental person but I guess I am a very sentimental person.

Have you ever thought about your two personalities?  Your inner personality (the one that only you knows) and your outer one ( the one that everyone deals with)?  I think my inner personality is an extrovert while my outer personality is an introvert.

Yesterday's rain

Rain in Kuwait

It rained almost all day yesterday.  I love rain.  Coincidentally I turned on my iPod in the car and Tracy Chapman was singing Let it Rain.  Coincidence or cosmic alignment?  I love how a good rain makes everything look clean and sparkly.  It is like the streets just had a shower, now if only the streets smelled like Herbal Essence shampoo I would be in heaven.  I am going to miss winter.  I always miss winter.  Maybe I should move to a country with colder cloudier climate.  I really shouldn’t drive and take pictures.  But in my defense the light was red and turned green while I was taking the picture.  So technically I wasn’t really driving.

Let it rain

It’s good to be home.  I have big plans but this time they are more realistic plans.  I learn fast.  I so miss crocheting too.  I got lots of lovely cotton yarn at ridiculously low prices compared to Kuwait and the variety was great too.  I should have bought more but I was afraid of being caught by customs for illegal export of yarn.

I had better go now and start working on my new awesome “to do for life” list because it is really long and I really want to tick off everything on it as soon as I can because I am alive so I have to do all of this stuff I want to do.

Buyology

Next time I shop I am going to cover my nose and use ear plugs, not sure what to do about visual advertising though.

One Year, 188 Questions

On February 15th 2009 I decided instead of posting personal status updates on facebook I would ask a daily question. That year has already gone by.  What started out as an experiment turned into a wonderful experience and a lovely habit.  I have gotten to know my friends better, had wonderful conversations and learned new stuff.  I have also noticed friends from totally different circles having conversations with each other which I think is an awesome thing.  Originally it was just a way to avoid the dullness of the status update or negativity and to start a conversation, it has done all of that and more.

I would like to thank everyone who has answered a question.

And today’s Question : Q.o.t.D:  What do you think of the Q.o.t.D, should I go on for another year?

Confessions on the Hair Monster

Yes, I confess, I am a hair monster.  I treat my hair really badly with the conviction that hair eventually grows out or back.   A word of advice, it grows yes that is true but it also gets angry and starts doing weird things if you abuse it way too much.  Over the years I have done some really bad bad things to my hair.

The Mullet

The mullet was not my idea, the mullet could not have been prevented.  In a sad sad summer, the summer when my parents sent us to Egypt and my mom was in China and my dad was in Scotland my sister and I were left with my grandmother.  My grandmother is a wonderful lady, she really is, her only problem was that she had this weird idea that a mullet cut would a) look good on us. b) would be more manageable.  Unfortunately she was wrong on both counts.  My sister had it even worse.  I would love to show you pictures but since we are both veiled now I can’t, plus I think my sister burned all evidence of that time.  Seriously mullets suck and are a pain in the neck to grow out.

Sheen

Sheen was so wrong.  Imagine Black Henna married to a regular perm. First of all it smells really strong and its application is torture you have to keep it on your hair for six hour so we would just apply it and wear a plastic shower cap and use an old pillow case on the pillows and fall asleep.  Falling asleep with smelly goo on your head is not a good idea.  Then you have to wash it off in the morning.  Washing it out was a pain too.  It’s like washing sticky sand out of your hair.  The effect is straight jet black hair.  It was awesome on my mom’s hair, who has naturally jet black hair.  On my sister and I it looked wrong, my sister is a red head and I am a brunette so we just looked like Adam’s Family Halloween costumes gone wrong.  What I hated the most was how the ends looked, they looked like pins sticking out.

Home Hair Dye

I dye my hair at home because I am lazy and a little bit cheap and usually really bored.  I get bored with my hairon a, my husband doesn’t like short hair so I decide to dye it.  That’s what happens.  I am good at the application and it turns out looking really nice, but boy does hair dye dry your hair.  Everytime I tell myself I am not going to do it again but I can’t help myself.

Diet Pepsi

Yes, I once poured half a can of diet pepsi on my hair.  Why?  Because we were at the beach and my friends were talking about how beer supposedly gives you that sun kissed bleached hair.  Since I don’t drink and won’t buy beer because of Religious reasons I thought I drink Diet Pepsi, maybe that would work on my hair.  I am not sure if it did or if it was the acid or because I slept for a couple of hours in the sun but my hair did get a shade lighter.  Brutal aren’t I?

Soap and Water

Have you ever washed your hair with hand soap?  Don’t, your hair will not forgive you easily.  There were times when I’d relalize too late that we just ran out of shampoo and I’d just wash my hair anyway with shower gel or regular soap.   Thankfully that doesn’t happen anymore because my husband and I buy too much shampoo and there is usually a bottle of baby shampoo too.  The odds of running out of three types of shampoo at the same time are not against my hair.  I love baby shampoo.  It smells so clean and fresh.  I also use the stuff for bubble baths for Lulu because it doesn’t hurt her eyes when she puts her face in the water to eat the bubbles.  Although if you do have an all natural organic olive oil soap bar, then by all means do try washing your hair with it, your hair will thank you.  Seriously, Olive Oil soap is just like magic.

I have done some good things to my hair too, they’re just not as many as the no-nos.  Like last year I tried the Brazillian Blow Dry Keratin thing.  At first I didn’t see a difference but then I realized that my hair was not as frizzy as it used to be and it was noticeably more manageable.  I also went through a phase of deep conditioning because I bought a jar of beautifully smelling deep shea butter conditioner, unfortunately I can’t find the stuff again.  I also tried the conditioner only cleaning method which was also really nice to my hair.  You wash your hair with conditioner only, no shampoo.  You need to use the cheaper kinds of conditioner because they are lighter and work better in this method.

What is the worst thing you have done to your hair?

What’s on your mind?

What is on your mind facebook

I think Facebook should come up with a different question than ‘What’s on your mind?’.  Even better I think it should change every day.  I had too much coffee and decided that these were smart questions for Egyptian users:

  • Eh el neez ya lazeez?
  • Sabba7 sabba7 ya 3am el 7ag.
  • Elle wa5ed 3a2lak?
  • Sar7an fe eh?
  • Enzel men 3ala wedani.
  • Zah2an? Tah2an? Medaye2? Yalla taha2 we zaha2 so7abak ma3ak.
  • Eh el a5bar ya shotar?
  • Eh el gedeed? Yalla 2ollena el mofeed.

And this is why children, you should not have too much caffeine.

The Next Time …

… you meet one of those salespeople standing in the mall offering samples of perfume, stop, get sprayed, and enjoy it.  I usually say no and run away.  Usually because I am not a perfume kind of girl, I either use White Musk or Vanilla both by the Body Shop.  I have used the two for the last 10 years, yes I am that loyal (also known as boring).  I got a whiff of the new Gucci perfume today.  I am still not going to buy it, and I don’t think I’ll be changing anytime soon, but I did enjoy the rest of the morning smelling totally different and feeling totally refreshed.  The next time someone offers to spray with me with a totally different and new scent I am going to say yes, expecting to experience something totally new and enjoy it.

I Still Think My Winners of The Nobel Peace Prize Are More Deserving

Back in April I imagined my own Nobel Peace prize winners, I still think they are better.

Why don’t they write songs about it?

Most songs are love-centric, which is weird because of you think of it, the average person isn’t in love the majority of the time.  Even people in a relationship eventually move from the “love” stage to the “life” stage.

Why aren’t there songs about:

  • Laundry.  The average household does laundry 2 – 3 times a week (based on my observation).  Why hasn’t anyone sung to laundry?  Detergent, fabric softener and the washing machine would make great heroes for the song.
  • Changing Diapers.  The average baby uses 3500 to 4000 diapers (based on my calculations), which a mom has to change.  Someone should come up with a song to cheer those poor Moms along the way.  I sing to my daughter while changing her diaper because at the moment if I don’t entertain her she tries to crawl away really quickly.
  • Being stuck in traffic.  I got stuck in traffic in apparently what turned out to be lunch break hour for a couple of hours.  I kept trying to think of the words for the traffic song but I couldn’t really concentrate because there was a huge truck carrying cement in front of me and I kept imagining what would happen if one of those bags got loose, fell on my car and then it rained.
  • Shopping.  Grocery shopping, shoe shopping, clothes shopping, whatever shopping.  Shopping is a serious sport for some people.  It deserves a song.
  • Email.  There’s a facebook song and a twitter song.  Email is the unsung hero of the internet.  Let’s all sing for email.

What song would you like to hear?

My Imaginary Zero Calorie List

Somewhere in my imagination is a wish list of foods that have zero calories.

  • Anything you eat off of your daughter’s plate.
  • Cake batter when licked off of the spatula.
  • Any recipe being tried for the first time.
  • Anything that has veggies in it, carrot cake would have zero calories.
  • Dishes with names you can’t pronounce.
  • Anything you eat while cooking, it’s just tasting not really eating.
  • Anything you eat while standing on one leg.
  • Anything you eat with your eyes closed.
  • Anything you eat while talking on the phone or watching a movie.

Disclaimer:  I just wish these things were zero calories.  Unfortunately they’re not
