I had been looking for a smart calendar for my desktop, something small, compact, good looking, easy to use and easy on the memory. I forget how I cam across Rainlender, but I am sure it was totally by chance because I was quite surprised to find it. It looks cool, you can skin it if you wish. It also has a To Do list and an events list, which are awesome because I always tend to forget the things I need to do and I usually have a text file that sits on my Desktop where I keep writing notes and taking them off.

Smashing Magazine published their November desktop wallpaper set a couple of days ago.
They are all awesome!
My only tiff is that they don’t have a wide screen version.
You can download the right resolution for your screen, with or without the calendar.

I like being an early adopter, well I try, so as of two minutes ago I just adopted Google’s Chrome browser. The interface is quite new with the tabs being above the buttons. After years of using Mozilla’s Firefox Chrome is different, I miss the status bar at the bottom of the screen, the ability to tweak everything to my heart’s desire and all of the addons and extras. Here is my 15 minute conclusion:
- As for speed I think it might be slightly faster than Firefox but I am not sure if that is just because of the newer cleaner cache.
- It is still open source so I like that too.
- I also like the “speed dial” thingy so you can directly access your most used sites.
- It is built with google gears in mind
- It is built from scratch.
I don’t like:
- Still new so no addons and other features
- The interface is not very pretty
I am still making my mind up, but in general I think I am going to like this one

Eeeek! Who still uses dial-up internet? I have no idea. I’ve been on DSL for so long that the sound of the modem connecting was so nostalgic, and that was where the nostalgia ended. My DSL connection needs to be renewed and because we pay by year we messed up the date thinking we still had a week to go instead our lovely provider just killed the connection instead of SMSing or calling to remind us.
I have become so dependent on the internet that just the feeling that for the day I would be disconnected from the rest of the world was so scary I almost killed myself panicking. My heart pounded and my palms felt sweaty and then my claustrophobia kicked in. I tried renewing using my credit card and it didn’t work for some reason only known to the e-Banking meanies. Next I thought I would take the baby and go pay but unfortunately the stroller is in my husband’s car who has already left for work. Being the ever pragmatic person that I am I seriously considered taking her in the baby carrier and going but turns out the weather forecast says its 50 degrees out there. So in fear of grilling my daughter in the sun I refrained.
Five minutes have passed and I was already mourning all of the emails I could have sent, sites I needed to browse, blogs I like to read in the morning and the world news that I could not see. For all I know, people might have broken up, gotten married or killed each other, how would I know without checking FaceBook. My family might think I am dead, they worry when they get to work and I haven’t emailed yet. I get up earlier feed my daughter and start emailing them. How on earth would they know I was ok? Yes I do have a phone, but rarely ever use it, being in a different country just means Skype has replaced the phone when I need to call a landline, GoogleTalk is great for chatting for hours without worrying it will cost an arm and a leg and my cell phone which I used to use all the time for work and calling friends has been retired to be used for the emergency phone call and sms. But isn’t this an emergency?
You must be wondering how come I am blogging since I have no internet right. Oh no you’re not, I am on dial up. I called the downstairs supermarket, which not only provides the emergency Diet Pepsi or Milk, and it turns out they sell dial-up cards. Wow! I was so happy, I felt releived. Like the clouds of Doom had just disappeared.
3 minutes later I had the card in my hand scratched and ready to log in. Only problem is I was so used to turning on my laptop and presto! wifi kicks in and I am online and I had never used my modem on this laptop, never used a modem on Vista and wasn’t sure I had even installed the drivers for my modem. I had even remarked to a friend that modems are obsolete and they should just stop shipping them. Well thank God that they hadn’t decided to do that.
Thankfully, I was logged in in minutes and no one killed anyone, no one got married or died ( I just checked FaceBook), my family knows that I am ok because I emailed them and I am now off to get my rss fix.
So to all of you out there who take DSL for granted, remember to say a little thank-you to it when you find yourself surfing at the good speeds and remember those who are not so fortunate.

When I was young we visited the Guiness World Book of Records museum in London and ever since then I have always had a fascination with world records. So when I stumbled upon Firefox’s attempt to break the world record in the number of downloads in a 24 hour period for Firefox 3′s release I was very excited to pledge. Of course I am already a Firefox user, and was going to download it anyway because it rocks and is the best browser in my humble opinion.
So if you are interested too, just click here and pledge.

After my last post on free software, Tarek commented that ClamWin did not provide real time virus scanning and recommended WinPooch, so I uninstalled ClamWin and installed WinPooch to give it a try. The interface wasn’t any better than ClamWin and had two very annoying issues. The first was that the tray icon was a pair of eyes which kept looking left and right and it was freaking me out, the second issue was whenever something came up that needed user interaction, the application would bark. Yes I mean doggy bark and that was very embarassing at work and even at home it would totally scare me when I wasn’t concentrating that my anti virus was barking. So I looked around again and installed Comodo. It looks easier to use and I will be using it for a while and decide if I want to keep it or if I will be going back to Google and asking for another anti virus program.

A few years back I made a pact with myself not to use any pirated software, mainly because I am a software developer and we all enjoy getting paid. My laptop came with Norton Protection Center pre-installed and recently it started warning me to update my subscription. So I decided to take the plunge and uninstall it and find an open source alternative.
I did a bit of looking around and decided on ClamWin which has been satisfactory so far, the interface is not as flashy as Norton but it gets the job done and it does it well and without being intrusive or tough on memmory.
I have already been using AlZip for 4 months for all my compression and decompression needs and it is awesome, it is made by AlTools, and they have other very useful utilities.
My other most recent find is Foxit, which is a PDF reader, yes I know Adobe Reader is free but it is slooooow and bulky. Foxit on the other hand opens up extremely fast and is very lightweight.

I have a thing for laptop bags, I hate the boring black kind that seems to be regular issue with most laptops, I already had a cool Timberland one but was not satisfied with it for 2 reasons. One it no longer was big enough for my new wide screen laptop the second is that it is a messenger bag and I wanted something that was more of a tote. So I spent a couple of days surfing and searching and decided that the only one’s that I fell in love with were all too expensive. So, I decided to find what was available in Kuwait, and again they were mostly the black kind or backpacks. Eureka did have a couple of models like the Abbi New York one’s, but they were too bulky. Then I saw the Macy Eastpak in a store and fell in love with it, the only catch was that it was not made for laptops, but the design was perfect so were the ample amount of pockets and the space was amazing. I decided to buy it anyway and then I had an epiphany, the bag was already padded at the bottom, I just need a sleeve and I could use this perfect. So I did, and now we all live happily ever after.
