Cinderella manages to find her prince even though she lives a tough life after losing her father and being treated like a maid by her step mother and step sisters. Ariel is an explorer and defies her father, King Titan to follow her enthrallment with all things human and then fights for her prince. I have always had a soft spot for the mermaid with her red hair and amazing world under the sea. Pocahontas teaches tolerance of other cultures and shows that acceptance and respect really can go a long way. Snow White is a princess who learns the hard way that trust should be earned not given to anyone, and that even tiny dwarfs can be yours best friend. Belle from Beauty and the Beast learns that even ugly beings can be really beautiful inside. I could go on forever, and even though I know that I am slightly dancing on the cheesy side of life, I think ever girl is a princess in her own world and should be encouraged to believe she is (without being catty or bitchy). If I am blessed with a little girl I think I would like to read her the stories first and explain why she too is a princess, a princess who can grow up to be a scientist, a doctor, an artist or anything else she wants to be and then let her enjoy the movie on her own. The world really is a girl’s kingdom we just have to teach them and show them how it can be. I have a thing for laptop bags, I hate the boring black kind that seems to be regular issue with most laptops, I already had a cool Timberland one but was not satisfied with it for 2 reasons. One it no longer was big enough for my new wide screen laptop the second is that it is a messenger bag and I wanted something that was more of a tote. So I spent a couple of days surfing and searching and decided that the only one’s that I fell in love with were all too expensive. So, I decided to find what was available in Kuwait, and again they were mostly the black kind or backpacks. Eureka did have a couple of models like the Abbi New York one’s, but they were too bulky. Then I saw the Macy Eastpak in a store and fell in love with it, the only catch was that it was not made for laptops, but the design was perfect so were the ample amount of pockets and the space was amazing. I decided to buy it anyway and then I had an epiphany, the bag was already padded at the bottom, I just need a sleeve and I could use this perfect. So I did, and now we all live happily ever after. Like N.E.E.T. Magazine, I am not one for fashion magazine’s but this is not just any magazine, it’s an e-zine and I am a geek AND it is sooo indie and unique. Truly brings out the indie chick in you. Seriously, YouTube has some really interesting videos. I was thinking about role models, and i was wondering why we don’t have more positive Egyptian women as role models. Women who have excelled in their fields and proven that despite the stereotype and perhaps some cultural and social barriers, they can still reach for the stars. After a lot of googling I realized that we have many authors and poets but hardly any scientists. As an engineer I know that there are lots of girls who do study engineering and other fields of science and there has to be women out there who made it in the field. I am very sure that not many are famous but they are definitely successful young women. One woman who literally does reach for the stars, Tahani Amer, works for NASA. The interesting thing was that she originally was going to Med school, then get married at 17 and moved to the US and did a degree in Engineering which eventually landed her a job at NASA during her senior year and had four children on the way. Think about it. I recently came across a website called Bless This Chick which lets you create your own girly avatar. It is so cute, you get to pick the dress, hair color, accessories, even angel wings or devilish horns. You can even make them and send them to your friends. For the seriously creative funky girl in you. This is for my sister who adores pink and loves shopping and is a pure princess with fairy wings when she’s in a good mood. |
