Historical Vintage and Classical Cars Museum [Things to do in Kuwait]

I have been meaning to write this post for quite a while now and decided to just bite the bullet and get on with it.  I have been away,  I am sorry, yada yada yada. If you have been following for a while (a very very long while) you will know that I sometimes just need time off.  I also blog on my craft blog more regularly because it is more about the crafting and not the living (get the hint?)

A couple of weeks ago my husband took a few days off (that is a very very rare thing) and we pretended we were tourists and did a bit of going out.

We visited the Historical Vintage and Classical Cars Museum. I was in Shuweikh and found this museum by chance and made a mental note to go visit as soon as my husband had some time off.  I knew he would enjoy it.

It was a beautiful sunny day with a nice cool breeze.

When you walk in you are greeted by two rows of vintage cars.

Walk inside and you will be greeted by some lovely model cars like this one.

I am not a car buff, but I do know that this is a Minerva and that it is ancient and that the leather detailing is amazing.

But by far my favorite car was the BMW Isetta

My daughter was absolutely fascinated by this car. She still talks about it and says she wants a car like the little yellow car with the door in the front that she saw before.

My husband truly had fun and so did my almost 4 year old little girl (who said that only boys like cars). It is definitely worth a visit.

Here is their contact info if you are interested in visiting.

A rooster taking a walk in a Salmiya neighborhood

This was taken this morning in Salmiya not in some rural area.

I kid you not!  I have nothing against urban chicken farming, but this is surreal.  Thankfully the rooster or chickens did not cross the road or I would have had to ask them why.

I am afraid of chickens.

Friday’s Five: Five reasons living in Kuwait is a good thing

  • My extended relatives don’t see me that often to tell me that I’ve gained weight.
  • Things cost almost exactly the same, but it feel better to pay 5 KD in Starbucks than it is to shell out a 100 LE bill.  The value is the same but the number is annoying.  Oh and the 1 pound coins are heavier than I remember.  I read an article a few weeks back about Egyptians hating the coins and thought that the Egyptians are just complainers, but I do see their point.  I always have around 10 LE in coins and they are quite heavy and have lots of volume.  I think they should make them smaller and lighter which would also mean they should be cheaper.  But maybe they won’t be as durable. Someone should explain why they chose that design.
  • Beep Beep Honk Honk, eley7eb el nabi yedrab kalaks.
  • WHO ON EARTH REDESIGNED THE ALEXANDRIA SMOUHA TRAFFIC MAP/PLAN?  Yes I am shouting.  Apparently that person was smoking pot or something because they just decided to transform two way streets into one way ones.  Theoretically that is not a problem but the signs are not really clear, so you take a right and suddenly find yourself face to face with incoming traffic and thousands of people cursing you and your family right up to your seventh grandfather.   They also didn’t bother to remove the roundabouts so it becomes really confusing.  But then again driving in Egypt is either in your blood or not.  Complaining about driving and traffic in Egypt is in all Egyptian’s blood.
  • But probably the most important reason is that it is where my home is.

Last To The Finish Line

Finish Line

Finish Line

I went to Breastcare Kuwait’s first walkathon this morning and took Lulu along. This wasn’t her first one but technically the first one she could actually walk in. And boy did that kid insist on walking. It was only about one km, roughly the length of the Avenues, but we were the last people to get to the finish line. She stopped to say Hi and Bye to anything that resembled a plant, looked at all the displays, stopped for her chocolate milk a couple of times and tried to ride the escalators but being the mean mom that I am, I stopped her. She’s a funny baby or her attention span is 1 minute and she got sidetracked from the walking a couple of times.
But it doesn’t matter, she came, she walked and she conquered. We both did. Sometimes in life we walk so fast to get to that finish line, trying really hard to be number one that we forget to stop and smell the roses (or say bye to plants). We feel that we must get there in the set route and as fast as we can. The reason I mainly went was because I really think raising awareness for breast cancer is really important and also wanted to get out of my shell and make new friends. I think I failed at both this time, but I succeeded in giving one little person an enjoyable experience. Perhaps when she is older she will walk with me and understand why I did what I did, and that sometimes you walk because you are trying to find your own finish line in your own personal obstacle course, building it and deciding on your own route along the way.

Bait Lothan and the Handmade Fair

Actually I don’t know what it’s called but I passed by Bait Lothan today to check out the arts courses and was met by a pleasant surprise.  They had a hand made fair with lots of super cute items like jewelry, home accessories and Mexican hand embroidered dresses.  I would have loved to take pictures but I was carrying little Lulu because I was too lazy to use the stroller thinking I would only be in and out in a couple of minutes.  I loved the paintings and the Mexican dresses they were all so beautiful.  The fair is still open tommorrow and after so if you’re in the neighborhood pop in and check it out.

Calling Moms in Kuwait

If you are the mother of an infant or toddler and would like to join other moms for a weekly weekday morning coffee while the kids play together and you live in Kuwait, please send me an email : jessyz[at]chocolatemintsinajar.com.

If you know someone who might be interested please let her know.

Having a small child is an exhausting thing and being part of a support group is a wonderful thing.  Being residents in Kuwait is harder than living in your own country surrounded by your family and friends and I understand that.  I just want a group of women who want to socialize, take the kids out for some sun and fun and at the same time enjoy some the company of other women.

Tareq Rajab Museum of Islamic Calligraphy

calligraphy-pen-holderThis morning I went to the Tareq Rajab Museum of Islamic Calligraphy.  I’ve been meaning to go all week and I finally managed to get there today (after getting lost a couple of times).  The museum has a beautiful collection of calligraphic art and artifacts.  Hand written Qurans from Turkey, Iran and Indonesia.  The Indonesian one was written on palm wood strips using hot nails, I have never seen something so simple yet so beautiful.  Just strips of wood, sanded and bound together with string.

Last year I read “My name is Red” which takes place in Turkey in the Ottoman times about minaturists ( the art of embellishing books) and I managed to see some examples of such art.

basmallahThe Islamic Arabic Chinese calligraphy was probably one of the most interesting collections at the museum.  Chinese calligraphy on its own is amazing and astounding but seeing it done in Arabic lettering was totally new.  The beauty of simple ink on paper is awe inspiring.  The fusion of two very different cultures bound by religion, penmanship and the love of beautiful writing was incredible.

Other interesting things were pieces of the keswa of the Ka3ba from the 19th century, a Mamluki

I think if you are in Kuwait you really must visit this musem.

Things to do in Kuwait

More than a year ago, when I moved to Kuwait, I wondered what could be done in Kuwait.  Last week my mother and sister were visiting for Eid and we discovered lots of interesting things that could be done.  Needless to say these activities were so much more fun because they were with me but I am sure you could still enjoy yourself on your own.

Marrakesh Decor was amazing

Marrakesh Decor was amazing

Dining out.  We went crazy trying different cuisines.  Our favorite was Wasabi a Sushi place, followed by Marrakesh a Moroccan place.  The rule was if you can’t pronounce it then you should order it.  We also had Indian and Chinese at Magha El Mahal.

Shopping, which I don’t usually enjoy was enjoyable this time.  I probably tried on dozens of different hats on my daughter and took funny pictures, so if you saw a crazy momy with a little baby girl with huge hats on her head that was probably me.

Color Me Mine selection of ceramics

Color Me Mine selection of ceramics

Pottery painting.  There’s a lovely little Color Me Mine cafe at Marina.  We spent 2 hours painting on ceramics, drinking coffee and generally having lots of fun.  I love doing Arts and Crafts but I am a bit painting challenged but it was not as difficult as I had expected.  My sister was the smartest one and chose a Mug that had a message on it so all she had to do was color it in.  My mother and I painted coasters which turned out to be harder because you have to use your imagination completely.

Fishes in the Aquarium

Fishes in the Aquarium

Aquarium and Imax:  I had already been to the Aquarium but not to the Imax shows. We went to two shows, one about Egyptian Mummies and another about Going to the moon.  They were amazing and the experience was really worth it.

The beach.  We all went to Nadi Ras el Ard and had a swim.  My sister got my daughter a huge yellow float with a little mini chair so she was so happy sitting in it in the water splashing around and kicking her feet like there was no tommorrow.

The musical fountain at Al Koot was also a wonderful show.  The weather was pleasant and we enjoyed the show.

We also went to the Moubarkeya Souk.  Lots of very interesting things were on sale and just the fun of browsing was enough, it is seriously worth a visit for a taste of a more authentic Kuwait.  You can buy copper items, bu5ur, silver and wooden boxes and so many different and interesting things.

There were other things which we wanted to do and see but didn’t have enough time.  We wanted to go ice skating and to the Zoo.  Next time insha2allah then.

Hope you all had a wonderful and interesting Eid too.
