It’s time for me to make a move
And I know what i gotta do
Coz I got everything to prove
I got a plan I’m sticking to
…
The word is that I’m over doubt
But I don’t let it get me down
I ain’t nobody’s push around
If they could only see me now
There’s only one thing on my mind
And I’m running out of time
I’m coming through so get out of the way
I am a woman on a mission, woah
Nothing can stop me, I’m stronger than ever
I wanna see this through
I am a woman on a mission, woah
Whatever it takes I will do what I gotta do
I’m gonna lay it on the line
I won’t give up without a fight
Coz I can see the finish line
Won’t stop till I make you mine
To read the writing on the wall
I’m ready here and standing tall
So people think they know it all
So I guess I’ll have to show them all
There’s only one thing on my mind
And I’m running out of time
I’m coming through so get out of the way
I am a woman on a mission, woah
Nothing can stop me, I’m stronger than ever
I wanna see this through
I am a woman on a mission, woah
Whatever it takes I will do what I gotta do
I am a woman on a mission, woah
Nothing can stop me, I’m stronger than ever
I wanna see this through
I am a woman on a mission, woah
Whatever it takes I will do what I gotta do
I never give up, I never give up, I never give up
I’m on a mission
I never give up, I never give up
I’m gonna see this through
I never give up, I never give up, I never give up
I’m on a mission
Whatever it takes I will do what I gotta do

I am a Tracy Chapman fan. For so many reasons I guess but this song reminds me of Winter, of our first car “The Uno” and of friends. So here’s one of my favorite songs of all time. To winter, to friends and to the freedom of owning a car and having a driving license. May all of those return for so many years to come.

The flower said, “I wish I was a tree,”
The tree said, “I wish I could be
A different kind of tree,
The cat wished that it was a bee,
The turtle wished that it could fly
Really high into the sky,
Over rooftops and then dive
Deep into the sea.
And in the sea there is a fish,
A fish that has a secret wish,
A wish to be a big cactus
With a pink flower on it.
And in the sea there is a fish,
A fish that has a secret wish,
A wish to be a big cactus
With a pink flower on it.
And the flower
Would be its offering
Of love to the desert.
And the desert,
So dry and lonely,
That the critters all
Appreciate the effort.
Et le jackalope a dit
Je voudrais être un yeti
Pour voler dans la nuit
Et m’en aller loin d’ici
Mais le yeti a dit
Je voudrais être un monstre marin
Pour pouvoir rentrer dans la mer
De tous les requins.
And the rattlesnake said,
“I wish I had hands so
I could hug you like a man.”
And then the cactus said,
“But don’t you understand,
My skin is covered with sharp spikes
That’ll stab you like a thousand knives.
A hug would be nice,
But hug my flower with your eyes.”
The flower said, “I wish I was a tree,”
The tree said, “I wish I could be
A different kind of tree,
The cat wished that it was a bee,

I turn on some music (Omar Faruk Tekbilek – One Truth Album), take out the coldest Diet Pepsi in the fridge and close my eyes and am amazingly moved to a different place in the world. My own world, where I don’t change diapers, where I still have a high rolling career and where the breeze is fresh and the sun shines softly and you can hear the waves in the background.
Most of my friends always find my “thing” for Amr Diab music quite weird, because it totally doesn’t fit with the rest of my music tastes. Yes it is true and I confess, but I have a reason. Growing up, Amr Diab always would release an album in the summer, and it would always psychologically get anchored to a happy summer vacation mood so by default any Amr Diab music just reminds me of the summer and the good days of being young and not caring about tomorrow.
This one is different, this one seems to hit home harder than the others, it reminds me of those summers more than the others and of Egypt and family and friends who are far away. Especially the song “Tool Mana Shayfak Gambi” which might sound corny to lots of you out there, but it has a different meaning to me, I keep thinking of the little things I used to love about Egypt, and when you are far away you really do tend to forget all of the bad things, those nuisances that made you go home angry and irritated, like double parking, hot & humid weather, rude people in the streets who spit and love shouting obscenities, and many more. You just tend to have a romanticized view of it, of sunny summers, clear weather, the beaches, having coffee with friends, going to Marina with your sister singing all your favorite songs at the top of your lungs all the way and back, skipping a couple of hours of work to go to the pool in the summer with your best friend.
Its not about the songs, or a singer or even the music, it is about what they might represent in our subconscious, as memories and feelings.
I am not a fan of Sherine’s, heck I am not even a fan of cheesy songs in general, but this one was so sweet. The words just hit me where it hurt. It’s just that Egypt is special in my own heart and even though I am officially a TCK (Third culture kid). Maybe that is the reason why I love Egypt because to this day it is a magical and mystical land to me.

Everyone has a story, but not everyone wants to listen, to just slow down, close your eyes and feel the persons story. As human beings we survive on stories, on myths and legends. As children we were read to, recited to and told of many amazing stories. A good story will grip you and make you think about the stories in your own heart. Perhaps that is why when I first listened to Souad Massi’s Raoui album I fell in love with it. Kol wa7ed menna fel kalbo 7ekaya (translation: Every one of us has a story in his heart). Souad Massi is one of my personal favorite artists. Although she is Algerian she plays no Rai, don’t take me the wrong way, I love listening to Rai. But here is a young woman who has gone against many currents and created her own story, her own style and her own identity. The winner of the 2006 BBC Awards for World Music and extremely talented, has three albums Deb (2003),Raoui (2004) and Meskilil(2005). Folk, country, rock and a touch of Portuguese fado, the music is enchanting and magnetic.
