Interesting Discussions to Follow

conversationI enjoy reading blog posts, but even more, I enjoy following the discussions that result when a post is interesting or hits a nerve.

Organica had a very interesting post on “Muslim Dating” which I found very interesting.  Young people today are finding it harder than ever to find a partner and still do it right.  The comments that followed were mostly deep, thoughtful and interesting.

Sudanese Optimist posted a very racist video made by Egyptians and called it Reason Number 9734 Not to support the Egypt.  I found the video annoying and stupid.  I had never given Sudan much thought to be honest, I never thought that Egypt was better or worse than Sudan.  I just knew that Sudan used to be part of Egypt one day and that there are conflicts in Darfur.  The discussion is a very intellectual and important one.  Please go over there and give the comments a read.  This is what some people think of the Egyptians and Egypt, it just might change your outlook.

And as James Nathan Miller said “There is no such thing as a worthless conversation, provided you know what to listen for. And questions are the breath of life for a conversation.”

6 People Worthy of the Nobel Peace Prize

noble_medals

The Nobel Peace prize is awarded to those who have helped keep the world a more peaceful place.  However there are people out there who have invented things that help keep world peace today and go unnoticed.  I would like to thank these people for making my life more peaceful.

Amazing family and friends

When you are really upset that you want to slit someone’s throat, they stop you.  When you are angry and want to commit suicide they give you the perfect pep talk.  When you are sad and depressed they hold your hand.  Having good people around you keeps the world a better place.  Think of Hitler, I am sure he didn’t have good people around him to guide him.

To the good people in my life, thank you!

Twitter and Blogging

Strange to say that Twitter or blogging help keep world peace, right?  Wrong!  Think of all of the angry people blogging, ranting or just telling the world what they are doing.  Imagine if all of these people had to bottle up all of their negative, angry and negative feelings, they would all burst or perhaps commit murder.  I must admit that some blogs though make you feel angry and negative but you learn to just close the tab and never visit the blog again if you are a normal person with no aggressive tendencies.  Twitter on the other hand helps people unload their feelings in 140 characters immediately which helps unload your pent up anger.  The old fashioned way is writing in  a diary, which also I would guess has helped many people feel better.  I kept thinking if Facebook is worthy of a mention here or not but decided against it.  Facebook helps the lonely people like me feel as if there is still a world out there full of people who actually do stuff but it also sometimes makes me angry and just in a plain bad mood so, no, sorry facebook you don’t deserve a Nobel.  So to the inventors of Twitter and blogging, thank you.

TV

Yes, TV is a peace device.  Imagine all of those bored married couples without a TV in their home.  They would actually have to talk!  They would probably end up at each others’ throats every day.  All of those channels to surf, all of that bad programming to sift through and all of the mind numbing shows to kill your brain cells and prevent you from waging a war.  TV inventor, thank you!  Oh, I almost forgot, YouTube people, thank you for all of the funny videos of cats stuck in a box of Kleenex!

Comfort Food

If every time you felt bad you had a fight with someone instead of just eating something you would be really thin but there would be many causalities besides your waistline.  To the people who have come up with fries, chocolate bars and ice cream of the world, thank you!

Coffee

Yes, coffee not money makes the world go round.  Coffee helps mothers around the world wake up and make the lives of the rest of the family work.  It helps your brain work when it is humanly impossible for it to tick.  It sometimes make the lack of sleep headaches go away at least for a short while to function and not kill people.  Not all coffee is equal though.  There is freshly ground coffee that has an aroma from heaven that fills the house and makes you walk on air.  Yes, I have actually experienced euphoria inducing coffee.  My happiest memories are with friends and family sharing the perfect cup of coffee, sometimes even the coffee was just horrible but the company was so awesome that coffee always makes me happy.  I confess, coffee makes me happier than chocolate.

To all of you perfect coffee beans out there, thank you!

To the person who realized that we can drink the stuff, thank you!

P.S. Mom that Maxwell stuff is horrible.

Headache Medication

If you have ever had a splitting headache or migraine then you knows exactly what I mean.  Your head is throbbing, your forehead feels like there is a construction site working on it and your eyes just want to pop out.  You pop a pill, two or three depending on how dependent on the stuff you are and in a little while the world is a nicer place again.  Some of us have it worse than others like myself who suffer chronic migraines which sometimes are vomit inducing and no amount of pills can make the migraines go away but at least when the pills work I feel like a human being.

To the person who discovered the formula, thank you!

Notable Mentions

Just because some things didn’t make my top five list doesn’t mean they don’t help the human existence like

  • Vacuum Cleaners
  • Washing Machines
  • Window Shopping (Online window shopping too)
  • The perfect shade of nail polish
  • Flavored Lip Gloss
  • Manicures and Pedicures
  • Good Books

Thank you to all of the inventors and authors out there.

Bloggers Who Have Taught Me a Lesson

I’ve been following a number of great blogs over the last couple of years.  These blogs might be personal ones but they certainly have so many lessons that are useful in life.  I don’t think the bloggers ever meant for these posts to be educational but they certainly are.

A lesson in Parenting: Mama Mona, taught me that being a mom of four doesn’t mean she can’t have lots of fun raising them.  She always puts a lot of thoughts into her posts and they are all interesting.  It must be exhausting to deal with four children, you have my respect Mona).

A lesson in Humility: Qwaider, taught me that it’s ok to acknowledge your mistakes and apologize.  (I think it was very big of him to publicly apologize like that, hats off to you).   Qwaider also puts a lot of energy in running community aggregators like QwaiderPlanet, GirlyGator and JordanBlogs.

A lesson in Thinking outside of the Box: Dee, has taught me that even fairy tales can have alternative endings. I also recommend that you read the comments, because her readers have come up with even funnier (and meaner) alternative endings.

A lesson about Change: Juka, has taught me that every great idea can begin with a very simple post.  A simple idea of going local instead of boycotting has started an initiative of buying Egyptian products.

A lesson on Social Media: LastoAdri, has taught me that dedication, energy and faith can start the wheels turning.  With one simple idea of KolenaLaila where all women can blog about what it means being a woman in today’s world in Egypt, to using Twitter, Facebook and other social media tools to get the word out.

A lesson about Hope: rJay, has taught me that even after your worst nightmare comes true, you will eventually wake up.  She is my sister, but this is not nepotism, she really does have some great character traits that I would love to learn.

This is definitely not a exhaustive list but just a great sample of the great bloggers out there.

I’m cool

Yes, MamaMona thinks so, and gave me an award to prove it.  Thank you MamaMona :-) .

“I’m choosing three blogs to pass it on to and asking that they tell us why they started blogging and then pass the love on to three of their favorite blogs.”

Aaaah three blogs?  But I have way more than three favorite blogs.  Doesn’t everybody?

I started blogging out of loneliness.  How pathetic is that?  I had started the blog before I got married and moved to Kuwait and hardly posted.  Suddenly I found myself all alone in a country where I didn’t know anybody, so I started blogging.  I think I enjoyed the fact that I was writing something and maybe someone “outthere” was reading.  Now it’s more of a hobby/addiction.  I’ve met lots of wonderful bloggers whom have become my friends and truly do make my days so much nicer.

My three chosen blogs:

RJayUpUpAndAway by RJay.  It is not nepotism, she really is an amazing writer with an over active imagination.  She rows (and falls into murky lakes)wants to be a professional skateboarder when she grows up and has decided to get out of the sand and into the clouds.

Ramblings of the disoriented mind by Juka.  She is smart, funny and writes short stories.  I promised to cite her as my role model when she scratches something off her bucket list.

Not Green Data by Tarek.  He has a very interesting list of Egyptian Evil Empires which includes microbus drivers, explains how to use an elevator and compiled a list of Egyptian blogging Genres.

And I couldn’t help myself, I had to fix the grammatical error in the above image (yes, I do have too much time on my hands).

Yesterday watching TV was so frustrating depressing, all the shows were about everything that’s wrong in Egypt and the blog-shpere is no better. The above logo is for an attempt to bring lighter subjects to out lives, click on the logo to find out more.
I totally understand that this is the real world and that we need to know what is going on. The unfortunate thing is that it is all just talk and talk is cheap. Where is the upside to all of this? Is anyone coming up with smart implementable ideas to fix any of the mentioned problems? I am afraid not. So unless someone comes up with a solution I am going to limit this negative input and replace it with more positive and healthy messages, at least in my own pink bubble life.

Kolena Layla

There are so many forms of abuse against women in Egypt and the Arabic world.  I know that there is also alot of inequality and unfairness towards women, but I think physical abuse or even emotional abuse should be dealt with first.  When a husband beats his wife because “he is the man” it crushes her soul and it sets the worst kind of example for their children.  The boys learn that this is acceptable behaviour and the girls expect this to happen to them and learn to accept it too.  When a man verbally abuses his wife to make himself feel better he is just proving that he is a “small” man.  When a father differentiates between his children because of their gender he is setting the ground for larger problems.  From a religous standpoint this is harram, we are all equal and we all deserve respect.

This is just off the top of my head to start off the topic of supporting this year’s “Kolena Layla” blog action day.

For more info head over to the blog or send them an email.
