One Year, 188 Questions

On February 15th 2009 I decided instead of posting personal status updates on facebook I would ask a daily question. That year has already gone by.  What started out as an experiment turned into a wonderful experience and a lovely habit.  I have gotten to know my friends better, had wonderful conversations and learned new stuff.  I have also noticed friends from totally different circles having conversations with each other which I think is an awesome thing.  Originally it was just a way to avoid the dullness of the status update or negativity and to start a conversation, it has done all of that and more.

I would like to thank everyone who has answered a question.

And today’s Question : Q.o.t.D:  What do you think of the Q.o.t.D, should I go on for another year?

Here are all 188 questions.  They are listed in reverse chronological order, the very first question is the one at the bottom.  You can always use these as conversation starters or ice breakers.

What’s on your mind?

What is on your mind facebook

I think Facebook should come up with a different question than ‘What’s on your mind?’.  Even better I think it should change every day.  I had too much coffee and decided that these were smart questions for Egyptian users:

  • Eh el neez ya lazeez?
  • Sabba7 sabba7 ya 3am el 7ag.
  • Elle wa5ed 3a2lak?
  • Sar7an fe eh?
  • Enzel men 3ala wedani.
  • Zah2an? Tah2an? Medaye2? Yalla taha2 we zaha2 so7abak ma3ak.
  • Eh el a5bar ya shotar?
  • Eh el gedeed? Yalla 2ollena el mofeed.

And this is why children, you should not have too much caffeine.

If you are a friend of mine on facebook you will have noticed that it has been ages since I have actually updated the status message with anything personal or related to my life.  It’s an intentional thing by the way.  After being subjected to other people’s terribly depressing status messages and the realization that instead of using facebook to connect, share or start a conversation it has become all about mostly depression, sadness or complaints.

I used to be guilty of updating my status with cryptic messages of pure depression, frustration or anger.  Getting out of my own pity party and canceling all future ones was a great decision.  It took me a while t0 realize that the people who really care usually already know and don’t need to be updated and the people who don’t, shouldn’t really know.  Instead, I ask a daily question of the day (QotD for short) and wait for my awesome friends to come up with funny, insightful and interesting answers.  Basically I have achieved more than I had in mind when I first started to ask the questions.

  • A conversation is born every time a question is asked.  We discuss, we laugh and we talk to each other.  I now know what kind of shampoo they would like to be, what their favorite songs of the moment are, what they would say if they were bumper stickers, what false assumptions people make about them and so many other interesting things.  Some questions work better than others but overall, someone always manages to amaze me either by coming up with a totally funny or interesting point of view or by showing me a side of themselves I had never seen.  Sometimes someone will message me or email me and we’ll talk some more about it.
  • Positivity and empowerment have replaced the negativity and complaining.  Instead of complaining I can ask a question.  Instead of feeling lonely, I now feel connected to my friends. When you give yourself permission to moan, you just take away your power to live and enjoy what you already have. I might be living a thousand kilometers away from my family and friends but I have chosen to connect every day with a simple question. In our busy lives it is becoming more and more difficult to connect with everyone on a daily personal basis, so this is my way of doing the next best thing. It might not be as deep having a long conversation, but it works for me.

So to all you amazingly cool friends who have answered my questions, thank you.

What do you do with your status?

FaceBook Friends

Facebook is a great way to keep in touch with your friends especially if you are living abroad.  What I don’t like is getting friend requests from total strangers.  Unless you are two, in a playground, you do not go up to random strangers and ask them to be your friend.  In the real world when you want to get to know someone, you introduce yourself, let them know who you are, what you might have in common so that the person doesn’t ignore you.  That is why you can add a message while creating a friend request, if I don’t know you, don’t have any common friends with you and you haven’t sent a message then I am going to press the ignore button.

On a lighter note, you can make FaceBook look like spring by using UserStyles if you are using Firefox.  You will need to have Greasemonkey or Stylish installed.

Sisters are doing it for themselves

The amount of young women starting up their own creative business endeavours makes me proud.  I am what you could call a simple feminist.  I am all for girl power, equal rights and strong women but with good traditional family values.  I love that these women are creative.  I love that they have passion for what they are making and that they are selling it.  I am seeing groups popping up on facebook every day by women selling jewelry, accessories and home accessories that they have made themselves.  I am also seeing lots of women who are selling clothes that have been bought in from abroad.  Although I am more proud of the women selling their own handmade goods because I think this is better for the economy and overall future of the country because it creates pride in Egyptian goods and should eventually create a productive society instead of a consuming one.

Here are some of the great examples that are on facebook:

Shakmageya copper jewelry.

Fofo hand painted t-shirts and bags

Crochet and Knit Lovers the name says it all.

Hand Touch handmade purses and bags

Personalized Accessories I just wish that they could come up with a catchy name like their lovely pendants and rings.

Any of these products would make a lovely gift.  Most of these artists offer personalization and special orders.  I also find prices amazingly fair and affordable.  If you have this kind of talent you really need to be out there making your stuff and selling it.
