Rainlender rocks

I had been looking for a smart calendar for my desktop, something small, compact, good looking, easy to use and easy on the memory.  I forget how I cam across Rainlender, but I am sure it was totally by chance because I was quite surprised to find it.  It looks cool, you can skin it if you wish.  It also has a To Do list and an events list, which are awesome because I always tend to forget the things I need to do and I usually have a text file that sits on my Desktop where I  keep writing notes and taking them off.

Google Chrome currently being tested

I like being an early adopter, well I try, so as of two minutes ago I just adopted Google’s Chrome browser.  The interface is quite new with the tabs being above the buttons.  After years of using Mozilla’s Firefox Chrome is different, I miss the status bar at the bottom of the screen, the ability to tweak everything to my heart’s desire and all of the addons and extras.  Here is my 15 minute conclusion:

  • As for speed I think it might be slightly faster than Firefox but I am not sure if that is just because of the newer cleaner cache.
  • It is still open source so I like that too.
  • I also like the “speed dial” thingy so you can directly access your most used sites.
  • It is built with google gears in mind
  • It is built from scratch.
I don’t like:
  • Still new so no addons and other features
  • The interface is not very pretty
I am still making my mind up, but in general I think I am going to like this one

More on free antivirus software

After my last post on free software, Tarek commented that ClamWin did not provide real time virus scanning and recommended WinPooch, so I uninstalled ClamWin and installed WinPooch to give it a try.  The interface wasn’t any better than ClamWin and had two very annoying issues.  The first was that the tray icon was a pair of eyes which kept looking left and right and it was freaking me out, the second issue was whenever something came up that needed user interaction, the application would bark.  Yes I mean doggy bark and that was very embarassing at work and even at home it would totally scare me when I wasn’t concentrating that my anti virus was barking.  So I looked around again and installed Comodo.  It looks easier to use and I will be using it for a while and decide if I want to keep it or if I will be going back to Google and asking for another anti virus program.

Free Software Tools

A few years back I made a pact with myself not to use any pirated software, mainly because I am a software developer and we all enjoy getting paid.  My laptop came with Norton Protection Center pre-installed and recently it started warning me to update my subscription.  So I decided to take the plunge and uninstall it and find an open source alternative.

I did a bit of looking around and decided on ClamWin which has been satisfactory so far, the interface is not as flashy as Norton but it gets the job done and it does it well and without being intrusive or tough on memmory.

I have already been using AlZip for 4 months for all my compression and decompression needs and it is awesome, it is made by AlTools, and they have other very useful utilities.

My other most recent find is Foxit,  which is a PDF reader, yes I know Adobe Reader is free but it is slooooow and bulky.  Foxit on the other hand opens up extremely fast and is very lightweight.
