Sometimes you need to go back to go forward {Wednesday’s WIPs}

 UntitledI had managed to finally get down my WIPs to just two blankets.  A ripple blanket and a hexagon blanket.  But, I had this feeling that I really wanted a shawl.  Not just any shawl, I want a big thick rectangular shawl that is cozy, but still lacy.  I looked on ravelry but I couldn’t find what I had in mind.  I didn’t want to use fingering weight yarn, because it is really hard to find here in Kuwait and the sock yarn I do have in my stash is mostly single skeins.

So I spent a couple of hours pouring over my stitch dictionaries until I found a few that  I liked.  Then a couple of swatches and modifications later I cast on.  I have 4 balls of this navy blue yarn, unfortunately I couldn’t find anything acrylic free so this is a wool/acrylic blend.  I have already used up one ball (so the shawl is bigger than it is in the picture), and three to go.  It is fun, but it was starting to get tedious.

So I decided I needed to cast on something else.  After a lot of thought, I decided on plain vanilla socks for the foot and then ribbing until the yarn ran out.  I want thick house socks, the kind that are long but will scrunch down the leg, if that is a thing.

Also the book was awesome, I probably read it in two days, and it is 400 pages.  It is a kids book, but I loved it.

UntitledI was so hung up on having no WIPs at all and getting them all done, but the monotony of a single project was killing me, sometimes you have to go back to go forward, with the two new WIPs I am knitting more and enjoying it more too.

 I am going back and forth between both projects. Well I’d better be off, those WIPs won’t knit themselves.

  1. Sometimes you just need a kids’ book! Most of my favorites are Young Adult Fiction, so I’m right there with you. Your shawl is off to a great start, and I love the yarn you’re using for socks. I am down to just two WIPs as well (I’m not counting some mittens I had started, because I pulled the needles out for a test knit and I have yet to get back to the mittens). I finished a hat for my husband last night and then cast on a pair of socks for myself, but there’s also a sweater for the husband that I should be working on instead. In my defense, I have a wonderful plan for all my sock leftovers, but I have to make the socks first in order to have leftovers….I need more hours in the day to get through all my yarn!

      Don’t we all need more hours in the day. And yes YA books are the best, they hit the sweet spot of enough fiction and naivety that doesn’t really exist in proper adult books.

    I feel the same way you do about shawls and have the same problem finding the yarn. could you please tell me what pattern you are using it looks great!

      Especially here in Kuwait most yarn is cheap acrylic which is ok, but not the best thing if you want to make a fancy shawl that will take hours and hours to knit. There is no pattern I just slightly modified a stitch pattern if you are interested email me jessyz at chocolatemintsinajar dot com and i can send it to you
