I had trouble learning socks, too, until I joined a group that is SocksToeUp. It is a Yahoo group. The ladies there are so helpful. And there are loads of patterns in the files and links.
I am in love with sock knitting now. It seems to be all I wnt to knit. LOL I don’t use DPNs though. I use 2 circulars.
I managed to finish the one sock but then lost interest. I blame the yarn, I was practicing using DK acrylic and I am hating acrylic at the moment. I frogged and started a couple of times. I find using two circulars easier too, but I wanted to make sure I learned using DPNs because they do come in handy sometimes.
I ordered lovely superwash fingering so I am planning to start a pair soon.
