The Purple Forest Outfit

I saw this fabric in the shop and immediately fell in love with it so I bought it right away.  I went home and did a quick search for the perfect outfit to make with it and found Mccalls 5416.  Originally I was going to make a reversible dress but when I asked my little one if she wanted an outfit with a pair of shorts or a dress she said outfit and shorts.  I love making her happy so I spent all of yesterday making it for her.  The pattern is pretty easy.  The only things I did differently was fully lining it because it gives a cleaner finish.  It did take me a while to figure out the shorts because this was my first time making shorts or anything pant like.  Overall I love the result and definitely plan on using it again.

I also had these pretty flower wooden buttons that went perfectly with the whole things. I think I got over my fear of button holes. I did make 3 practice button holes on scraps just to make sure I was ready.

The little one is happy too, she didn’t want to take it off last night and wanted to sleep in it. I got the pattern from SewingPatterns.com . I totally love them, the site needs to be improved a lot but the service is just awesome, you can buy the pattern and get the printable pdf right away. You can also choose to get the PDF in either letter, ledger, A4 or A3 format which is perfect because my husband has an A3 printer. I’ve been trying to convince him that he needs an A0 printer but he isn’t sold on the idea yet. Just imagine printing a pattern on a single sheet. I also think I need a cutting mat and a rotary cutter. Any suggestions?

That little number is just gorgeous

  2. Too cute, the fabric and the buttons are darling 🙂

  3. It is really beautiful. No wonder your little one didn’t want to take it off 🙂 I would say that it got the stamp of approval. Button holes are scary. I chickened out. The next time I bought a machine I got one of those attachment thingys that allow you to put the button in the holder and the machine works it all out. Cowardly I know. Great stuff.

I have one of those but it still takes practice because mine doesn’t stop when it gets to the end so you still need to focus

This is a delightful little dress! I love it, no wonder she didn’t want to take it off.

Lovely!!! Those buttons look like they here made just for that outfit, they finish it off so nicely!

It is funny because I only bought two and thought they were so cute but I didn’t think I would use them, and I found them while I was raiding my button stash and they were perfect

  6. Just had a little giggle to myself reading how you practised three times on scrap with your buttonholes…’cos I did exactly the same just after Christmas. I had been so scared of doing them..now I love watching the maching do them perfectly. I love your buttons too…they work perfectly with the design of the fabric. Good work.

They’re still not perfect 🙂 but I can live with slightly wonky button holes as long as they are functional. I am sure with more practice they will get better.

Beautiful outfit, the buttons are fabulous!
That sewingpatterns website looks dangerous, if you get the pattern right away, too tempting. I may have to try to forget I know about it now.

Oops! I am sorry. The thing is patterns aren’t available here easily and I have to buy them online anyway, so I might as well get instant downloads.

These little vintage style pinafores are the sweetest. I always loved them on my chickens when they were little. What beautiful work, and those buttons are perfect! : )

  9. Love this outfit and the fabric, but the choice of buttons is divine!

  10. So cute and lovely!!! I wish I could sew such gorgeous creations. I think I need lessons! Going to try your “dirty” zipper method for a crocheted purse!!! 😀
